Two drivers have been arrested for allegedly stealing relief food meant for victims of floods in Migori County.

The duo was arrested in Awendo town over claims of stealing three bags of maize, a bag of beans, bales of blankets and mosquito nets.

Awendo Sub-County Police Commander Mathias Pombo said investigations have been launched into the matter.

"We are holding them, and they will record a statement," Mr Pombo said, adding that the suspects were nabbed following a tip-off from the public.

On Monday, Governor Ochillo Ayacko led in the distribution of food and non-food items to families affected by floods in Nyora, Kabuto, Lwanda, Modi, and Angugo.

The food and non-food items included 6,300 kilograms of beans (70 bags), 200 bags of rice, 800 bars of soap, 10, 800 kilograms of maize, 750 bales of blankets, water treatment chemicals, and mosquito nets.

"We will also be establishing structures for the affected families whose homes were destroyed by the rains," Governor Ayacko said.

The remaining food items were to be transported back to the county offices.

Yesterday, the County Executive Committee member for Environment Caleb Opondi, said food stuffs were transported through the Ndhiwa-Rapogi road after heavy rains destroyed a murram road along the Migori-Sori road.

"When it reached around 9:30 pm, we got a report from residents about the theft," Mr Opondi said, terming the incident unfortunate and uncalled for.
