Leaders from Isiolo and Wajir yesterday held a peace meeting over perennial border hostilities between the two counties.

Under the auspices of the Wajir Peace Development Agency (WPDA), the meeting attended by political, religious, national, and county representatives in Isiolo sought to find a lasting solution to inter-county conflicts over the use of local resources.

Both county commissioners from Isiolo and Wajir acknowledged that although hostilities were common, there was a need for communities from both sides to co-exist and embrace the spirit of sharing scarce resources, especially pasture and water.

"Building lasting peace takes time. The road to peace is bumpy, long, and unpredictable. Support of local efforts to bring lasting harmony must be consistent," said Wajir County Commissioner Karuko Ngumo.

Wajir Peace Development Agency Chief Executive Officer Abdinasir Ali said the peace initiative is important since it provides a platform for open and constructive conversations, allowing different communities to come together and address conflicts or misunderstandings.

Further, subsequent meetings will foster understanding, empathy, and cooperation besides helping to bridge divides and build stronger relationships.

"They allow individuals to express their concerns, share their experiences, and listen to others with respect and empathy. Through peaceful dialogue, communities can find common ground, explore solutions, and work towards peaceful coexistence," he noted.
