We will fight terror devoid of extrajudicial processes, CS Kindiki

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has said the government is determined to fight terrorism without extra judicial process.

Speaking during the national tree planting day at Garissa University, the CS acknowledged support from residents in Northeastern for helping the government in the fight against terror.

"I would like to announce here that this administration will fight terrorism without hurting our people and without involvement of extra judicial killings and processes,” said Kindiki.

The CS said the government will not condone any sort of extra-judicial processes, noting that they have had internal meetings to sensitize top security bosses against the vice.

The CS while asking for continued support in the fight against terror also warned that not an inch of Kenya will be forfeited to terrorists adding that religion will never be dragged in the fight against terrorism.

He also hailed leadership of the region saying they have been at the forefront in sensitizing communities against colluding with the terror groups.

Kindiki's remarks follow a petition by nominated Member of Parliament Umulkheir Harun at the National Assembly over increased abductions blamed on security agencies.

The lawmaker who termed the recently increased disappearances of individuals as pressing told abductions and extra-judicial killings intimidates community members and scares them from engaging security agencies.

“These young people are abducted both broad daylight and at night with unmarked police vehicles, the recent case is three young men who were released after we the leadership made noise,” she told Parliament last week on Wednesday.

Abdirashid Hish also known as China was released last week after he was abducted outside Garissa police station in the presence of his family members, according to family members he was detained for more than a week to unknown place.

While speaking during the tree planting day at Garissa University, Umukheir said security agencies rely on the communities they work for information noting that continuous extra-judicial processes such as illegal detention and extra-judicial killings undermine the spirit of National counter terrorism efforts.

“It's counterproductive because people scared will not report anything to security agencies, let everyone arrested be taken through a legal judicial process,” she said.

Human rights defenders in the region have decried continuous human rights violations including illegal detention and enforced disappearances.
