Two sustain injuries after attack by hyena

Two middle-aged men are nursing serious injuries after they were attacked by a hyena while attending to their livestock in Dertu location in Daadab sub-county, Garissa County.

The two, Mohammed Said Bare, 45, and Harun Abdi Ali, 35 years old, were attacked by the wild animal at Fafkalala area and managed to wrestle the hyena before escaping with serious wounds on their hands and chests.

Confirming the incident, the area Chief Mohammed Hutle Bull told The Standard that the two were rushed to Dertu Health Centre for first aid before being transferred to Garissa General Hospital for further treatment.

"The two who are relatives, were attending to their flock before being attacked by the hyena. Harun was bitten on the left palm while Bare sustained similar wounds on both hands.

This was a result of the struggle with the animal. We are glad they are recuperating well," the chief said.

The case was reported at the Dertu Police Station.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) was yet to remark on the attack at the time of publishing this story.
