The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) in Kenya plays a crucial role in financing higher education for students. Its primary function is to disburse loans to Kenyan students pursuing university education. The funding provided to students combines scholarships, loans, and household contributions. Here's how to apply for a HELB loan:

Gather Required Documents

To apply for a HELB loan, you will need the following:

  • A copy of identification documents (passport, birth certificate, or national ID) in the student's name
  • A copy of the guarantor's national ID
  • Academic certificates and transcripts
  • Admission letter from the institution
  • Proof of tuition fee payment (if applicable)
  • A registered telephone number in the student's name
  • A valid email address for the student

Fill out the application form

  1. Visit the HELB website at www.helb.co.ke to access the Student Portal.
  2. Read and complete the HELB Financial Literacy guide.
  3. Click on "Loans," then "Students," and then "Register" to create an account.
  4. Enter your ID number. If you don't have a National ID, use your KCSE Index number.
  5. Provide a valid email address and password, then click "Register."
  6. Check your email to activate your account and log in.
  7. You can also download the HELB mobile application from the Play Store and follow the instructions to apply for the Higher Education Loan.

Attach required documents

Attach all required documents to the application form, including:

  • A certified copy of your ID or passport
  • A certified copy of your academic certificates and transcripts
  • A copy of your admission letter from the institution

Submit your application

  1. Sign the form and attach all the necessary documents as indicated in the checklist on the last page of the Loan Application Form.
  2. Present one copy of the fully completed Loan Application Form and all the attached supporting documents at any of the selected Huduma Centers across the country.
  3. Retain one copy of the form for your records.

Note: The HELB loan application process is free of charge. Do not pay anyone to process your HELB loan. For inquiries, you can contact HELB or visit their physical address at Anniversary Towers, Nairobi.
