Three men who police say robbed a woman off her mobile phone along Outering Road have been charged before a Nairobi court.

Stephen Mutua, Tom Kioko Kitonga and Abdul Mohammad were arrested by the officers from Buruburu on suspicion of robbing Eunice Nyambura of her mobile phone worth Sh13,000 on December 17.

According to the charge sheet, the three are facing charges of robbery with violence and possession of a fake firearm in contravention of the Firearm Act.

The fake gun, according to the court papers, was a partly wooden and partly metallic object, an indication that they intended to commit a crime.

Nyambura was heading home in the company of her friend when she was accosted by two men armed with a knife and a gun. She was directed to lie down. Her attackers threatened to harm her if she did not comply. Her mobile phone was forcefully taken away and the two men hopped onto a waiting motorcycle and sped off.

Luckily two officer's on patrol from Buruburu police station spotted the bike and having suspected them, intercepted the bike. They were asked to identify themselves, where they were going and where they lived but they failed to explain themselves.

This prompted the officers to conduct a quick search on them and they recovered the fake gun. The cops recovered five assorted mobile phones from the suspects, including one stolen from Nyambura.

Nyambura, having reported the incident with the authorities, was later contacted to go identify if the recovered phones included hers.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges before a Makadara law court. They were released on a bond of Sh800,000 pending hearing of their case on June 20, 2024.
