Singer Ally B, known for hit song 'Maria' is dead

The Kenyan entertainment scene is mourning the loss of coast-based musician Ali Mwakaribu, popularly known as Ally B, who is known for hits like Maria, Bembea and Kadzo among others.

The singer reportedly passed away on the afternoon of November 1 at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital. He had been battling a short illness of Pneumonia before then.

His brother, Mohammed Ramadhan confirmed the news to local media outlets, saying that he returned home feeling unwell in the afternoon, leading them to rush to the hospital.

"We took him to Makadara, but he did not make it," he said.

Messages of condolence have begun to trickle in from the singer's colleagues and fans.

The renowned Benga artiste Suzanna Owiyo wrote on Instagram: "Oh No..This is the saddest news I have heard today. Ally B is no more. Rest in Power."

Rapper Khaligraph Jones wrote: "Sad day for Kenya Today, we just lost a legendary Artist from the Coast. Rest well Brother Ally B."

When the news was posted on a popular Instagram page, fans remembered him for his talent and music that has stood the test of time.

One Rosalita wrote: "So sad, I grew up listening to his songs."

"Oh no, I loved the song Maria," wrote one Wanja.

Mombasa-based blogger Mykol Machampali told an online news website that the singer experienced complications with blood pressure right before his passing.

"The person who was with him last week said he had been diagnosed with pneumonia. He developed complications today. It seems his pressure went up, and as he was being rushed to the hospital, he passed on," Machampali said.
