Tired of seeing political posters around their neighbourhood, Kilimani residents have decided to remove them from their perimeter walls, electric poles and guardrails.

The residents say the posters that have been there for months have turned the neighbourhood into an eyesore.

"We came together to do cleanup after elections; it is symbolic because it will allow us to shake hands after the anxiety-driven electioneering period," Daniel Nyakora, the board chairman of Kilimani Project Foundation, said.

Nyakora said this was a good opportunity to meet with those who were elected and those who lost and to remind them of the work ahead, which is governance.

"Kilimani is a close-knit community and we want to set an example to the rest of the country to come together to remind them to put elections behind us and work for a better country," Nyakora said.

The residents said that some of the issues local leaders have sought to resolve include noise pollution and nuisance.

Nyakora said if the leaders would engage with the residents in future, then there would be no need for them to put up the posters, stating that the work of governance and development is now of the essence.

Kilimani MCA Moses Ogeto, who joined in the efforts, said the move was "extraordinary" since the politicians are the ones who pinned the posters.

"I had promised that I would engage in a cleanup exercise after elections to remove the posters in Kilimani. I'm also happy that other aspirants who were not lucky are here so that we clean up the environment," Ogeto said.

"Kilimani is so big and we hope by the end of today, all the posters will have been brought down. Others have sent representatives."
