Reggae Star Jah Cure sentenced to six years in prison

Reggae singer Jah Cure was on Tuesday sentenced to six years in prison in the Netherlands for attempted manslaughter.

This came after he was accused of stabbing a promoter, Nicardo ‘Papa’ Blake, 45, on October 1 at Dam Square, in the city center of Amsterdam, where he was booked for a performance. 

In his defense, Jah Cure claimed that he was acting in self-defense and had no intention of stabbing Blake, adding that he was protecting himself because he was wearing a valuable watch. His legal team has the option of appealing the case at the court of appeal.

The ‘Love Is’ crooner has had prior run-ins with the law.  He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, rape, and robbery with aggravation, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1999 after being convicted, but was released early in 2007 after serving eight years.

Four years later, he was charged with drug possession after police discovered a little amount of marijuana in his vehicle.

Being behind bars never stopped Cure’s mojo as he released three albums and a number of singles while incarcerated.

In 2000, he published his first album, 'Free Jah's Cure The Album the Truth,' which was followed by 'Ghetto Life' in 2003 and 'Freedom Blues' in 2005. 'True Reflections...A New Beginning,' his fourth album, was released just four days after he was freed from prison.

Following his 2015 album, The Cure, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. His latest release was Blood in the Water which was released in February 2022.

Before his arrest, Jah Cure had hinted that he was working on his new album titled ‘Undeniable.
