Security tightened outside Parliament ahead of Gachagua impeachment debate

Police have increased security around Parliament Buildings, Nairobi ahead of the debate on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment motion.

Police patrols have been observed in the area, with major roads leading to Parliament blocked to the public.

Only Members of Parliament and other dignitaries are allowed access to the highly-guarded area after thorough screening.

Administration Police officers and anti-riot units have been stationed within the Nairobi Central Business District at key points along Harambee Avenue, Parliament Road, and City Hall Way.

MPs are set to debate the impeachment motion following the presentation of a report on the public participation exercise held from October 2 to 5.

The debate is expected to last more than six hours before Gachagua is invited to make his address in the chambers.

MPs will then vote on the motion, which requires 233 votes to pass.

If approved, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula will forward the motion to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi within two days.
