Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's sister, Leah Wangari Muriuki, will be laid to rest at her home in Nanyuki on July 3.

She died on June 25 at the age of 82 after a long illness.

Deputy President Gachagua has expressed his grief over the loss of his elder sister, remembering her as a 'caring mother and family matriarch.'

"I am saddened to receive news of the passing of our eldest sister, Leah Wangari Muriuki. Leah has been our mother and the family matriarch; she has taken good care of the larger Gachagua family after the death of our father and our two mothers," he said.

Gachagua underscored Wangari's role in looking out for the family following the death of their biological parents. He described the period as a challenging time for him both as a leader and a family man.

"We are devastated by the loss of this family head. My deepest condolences to her husband, her children, and grandchildren. This is a very difficult week for me as a national leader and a family man. May the Lord heal our nation and families," Gachagua noted.

Wangari's death follows the passing of Gachagua's only surviving brother, Jack Reriani, less than two years ago.
