The Director of Public Prosecution Renson Ingonga has cleared the way for former National Museums of Kenya Director-General Dr Mzalendo Kibunja to be charged over an alleged Sh400m payment to ghost workers.

Kibunja is set to be charged with embezzlement of funds at the National Museum of Kenya, which was allegedly paid as salaries to ghost employees and later transferred to three officers in the institution.

He will be charged alongside three museum employees and one employee of Equity Bank namely: Stavan Ongalo, Oliver Okinyi, Wycliffe Odhiambo and Oscar Mwaura.

"The DPP upon further independent and thorough review of the resubmitted inquiry file, was satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to warrant the prosecution of the suspects," read the statement in part.

Among the charges the five faces include conspiracy to commit an office of corruption, abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, acquisition of proceeds of crime and financial misconduct
