A Kenya Police Reservist (KPR) was gunned down by suspected bandits during a security team operation in Laikipia County on Friday afternoon.

The reservist, Daniel Karichu, had accompanied other KPRs and police officers from a nearby post following reports that unidentified groups of people had been spotted in nearby thickets.

Karichu was a farmer in Segera ward. The attack occurred barely an hour after President William Ruto announced plans to engage more reservists in the county during a meeting at Rumuruti grounds.

"I give you my word that we are going to secure Laikipia County as we have secured the other counties in Kenya," said the President.

"The noise you hear from bandits are the last kicks of dying horses. Let us work together. Do not hide criminals and bandits."

Area residents complained of growing insecurity and called on the government to increase the number of security officers to deal with the bandits.

The residents called on the Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki to hold a meeting in the locality to address the security concerns.

"Insecurity in Laikipia should be addressed by the highest office for the interest of the locals," said a resident.

Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Muli said security agents were pursuing an armed gang implicated in the murder.

The attack comes a week after Ethi residents raised concerns over increased livestock theft.
