The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has condemned the attack and threats against Standard Group reporter Osinde Obare.

In a statement, the council's CEO David Omwoyo called on the police to conduct urgent and thorough investigations into the matter.

Obare was attacked at a burial ceremony in Goseta, Trans Nzoia County on March 22 while documenting clashes between supporters of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and those of the county Governor George Natembeya.

"Since the incident, Mr Obare has faced a series of threats, including anonymous phone calls and attempted break-ins at his residence," says MCK's statement.

The council wants Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to assure the journalist of his security as investigations continue.

"The Council has written to the Inspector General of Police, calling for thorough investigation into the threats and harassment against Mr Obare and bring the culprits to book."
