Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua celebrated the New Year with inmates at King'ong'o GK Prison Nyeri.

He emphasised the government's commitment to reform correctional facilities and enhance the working conditions of prison warders.

Accompanied by his spouse, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, the Deputy President spent time with the prisoners and shared lunch. He also gifted them 2,000 pieces of mattresses and blankets.

The day-long event, dubbed "King'ong'o Prison New Year Service and Party" was marked by prayers and preaching led by Pastor Dorcas, who delivered a sermon of hope for the New Year 2024.

"The fact that you are here is not a life condemnation to death but a challenge in life. Be positive about it and change to a better person in life. Those who committed crimes can become better people," said the Deputy President.

"I want to encourage you because the government of President William Ruto has made plans to transform the Prisons department and its services."

He said the focus is on areas of agriculture mechanisation, furniture, and mechanics workshops to promote training in courses and life-changing skills.

Correctional Services PS Salome Wairimu Muhia-Beacco, Commissioner General Prisons Service Brigadier (Rtr) John Warioba, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Senator Wahome Wamatinga, MCAs led by area Ward Representative Simon Mbogo, the clergy, among other leaders, were also present at the event.

The Commissioner General of Prisons and the PS said it was a privilege for the Prison department to be visited by the DP.

Emphasising that the Kenya Kwanza administration is committed to reforming the national security sector, Gachagua said officers in the National Police Service, Prisons Service, and the National Youth Service will receive a 40 per cent pay rise starting July.
