All police officers on leave have been directed to resume duty with immediate effect.

Issuing the orders, Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome said the move is aimed at enhancing police visibility and security across the country.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, December 20, the IG also issued a stern warning to corrupt police officers stating that his office is collaborating with other government agencies like Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) to fight the graft.

Koome also urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules to make the festive season safe for all.

"The vehicular situation this year is further compounded by the ongoing heavy El-Nino rains being experienced in many parts of the county, which in turn is causing poor visibility on the roads," Koome stated.

He said that police data indicated that traffic accidents are a leading cause of injuries and fatalities with negative financial and health implications of accidents on victims and caregivers.
"Already we have had two major fatal road accidents in which we have lost a total of 16 people in Machakos and Nakuru since last week," the statement adds.

IG Koome also urged compliance with traffic regulations including the use of safety belts, not driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and avoiding dangerous overtaking.
