World record holder Eliud Kipchoge has won his fifth at the Berlin Marathon as Ethiopia's Assefa Tigst set a new record for women's mixed-race world record.

Kipchoge, who made his sixth appearance at the German flagship 42km contest, won in 2:02:42. Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie won four times.

He was followed closely by Kenyan debutant marathoner Vincent Kipkemoi finished second in 02:03:12.

Ethiopia's Tadese Takele came in third in 2:03:24. The two made their debuts in Berlin.

He is the current holder at 2:01.09 set at the course last year.

Kipchoge has won the Berlin Marathon races in 2022, 2017, 2018, and 2015. He finished second in 2013 when Wilson Kipsang set a then-world record 2:03.22.

In the women's category, Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa broke the women's world record at the Berlin Marathon in 2:11:53.

This is against Brigid Kosgei's record set for women running in a mixed-sex race, with a time of 2:14:04. Kosgei made the achievement on October 13, 2019, at the Chicago Marathon.

Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui finished second in Berlin Marathon after clocking 2:17: 50, missing to lower her personal best time of 2:17.39 she posted at the Valencia Marathon last December.
