The Kenya African National Union (Kanu) has appointed a six-member National Disciplinary Committee to deliberate the case of its Secretary General Nick Salat.

Salat was suspended on December 15, 2022, for gross misconduct and violation of the party's constitution.

The committee will be chaired by Kilgoris MP Hon. Julius Sunkuli and deputized by Gladwell Tungo. Arnold Otieno will serve as the Secretary, and Josephine Leado, Ali Ogle and Joshua Mukirae will serve as members.

The party says that the decision to form the committee was informed after receiving complaints from the party's MCA and People Living with Disabilities caucuses through their chairpersons Handman Saya and Adinuur Ali.

Salat is accused of making remarks that belittled the person, stature and office of the National Chairman Gideon Moi during a Kanu elected leaders meeting held on December 3, 2022, at the Alps Hotel in Nakuru.

He is also accused of berating the party's long-term partner organisations in the presence of their senior international.

"The NEC was also informed that Mr Salat's behaviour was a continuation of a streak of misconduct unbecoming to the coveted office of a Secretary General by forming parallel axes within the party and issuing unsanctioned statements that were contradictory to the party's official position," said Joseph Towett, Kanu's Director of Communication in a statement.

Towett said that Salat will be granted a fair and impartial hearing, adding that the party will not hesitate to instil discipline and order within its leadership rank and file without fear or favour.
