Asad Khan, the rally driver who is receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital over alleged domestic abuse, is alive, contrary to reports suggesting he is dead.

A close family member, who spoke to The Standard in confidence, said that Khan is undergoing dialysis at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the city hospital.

The rally driver's girlfriend is alleged to be behind the serious injuries inflicted on him on Monday.

The woman, who is out on Sh100,000 cash bail, claims that Khan sustained the injuries after he kicked a window that leads to the balcony in which she was hiding during a domestic fight at Khan's Kilimani home in Nairobi.

"The window glass, which broke into pieces, injured him, resulting in excessive loss of blood," the woman's lawyer said in court.

Police, however, said the suspect will assist in investigations as they wait for the patient to recover so that he can record his statement.

The court in Nairobi directed that the suspect should not be deprived of her freedom until the circumstances that led to her boyfriend's hospitalisation are conclusively established.
