Chuka Igambang'ombe Returning Officer gone missing? Not true

Reports claiming that Chuka Igambang'ombe Returning Officer Josephine Mwiti went missing on Monday evening, August 22, are untrue.

The reports first surfaced on social media on Tuesday morning, August 23, when a Twitter user, Pius Kinuthia (@Believe_Kinuthia) said on his page that the returning officer had "gone missing since last evening".

The tweet received at least 220 retweets, 160 comments and 1,220 likes as of the time of publishing this story.

Returning Officer Josephine Mwiti has told The Standard that she is safe and sound, and that the reports of her disappearance are inaccurate.

"I'm at my home as we speak. I'm safe and sound," said the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official.

Chuka Igambang'ombe in Tharaka Nithi County had 84,708 registered voters ahead of the August 9, 2022 General Election. The voter turn-out was 58,806 (69.4 per cent), as per IEBC data.

In the constituency, UDA presidential candidate William Ruto got the most votes (53,038), followed by Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga (5,249).

George Wajackoyah of Roots Party got 346 votes while David Maure of Agano Party got 173 votes.

Patrick Munene, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Chuka Igambang'ombe, won re-election on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party ticket.

He got 26,732 votes against Independent candidate John Mbabu's 12,785.

Others are Geoffrey Njagi, an independent candidate (9,168), Eric Muthomi of The Service Party (6,808), Mercy Mutegi of Jubilee (2,553), Maltex Gitonga, an independent candidate (368), Jamleck Mbae, an independent candidate (280) and Kathe Gwa Kathee of Wiper (253).
