Kalonzo unveils Azimio plan for super coalition

The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Council has resolved to reorganise the party structures and rebrand the coalition to solidify it support across the country in readiness for the 2027 general election.
Wiper Patriotic Front Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who hosted the Council meeting, said they had resolved to engage DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, PLP Leader Martha Karua and UGM Party Leader David Maraga to join the coalition.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was expected to chair the meeting, did not show up but was represented by Jubilee Secretary General Moitalel ole Kenta while Gachagua, Sifuna, Karua and Maraga, who were expected to attend as friends of the coalition, were engaged elsewhere.
“The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Council will be engaging with DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua, Linda Mwananchi Leader Edwin Sifuna, PLP Leader Martha Karua and UGM Party Leader David Maraga for us to form a super coalition,” said Kalonzo.
The Council invited the Democratic Party Led by former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, People's Democratic Party led by former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara and Umoja and Maendeleo Party associated with former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza to join the coalition.
The Council in resolutions read by Suba South MP Caroli Omondi resolved to admit to admit Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiangi, Party of National Unity Leader Peter Munya and former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti to become Azimio Council members.
“The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Council has also resolved to invite Democratic Action Party in Kenya(DAP-K) led by former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa to rejoin the Azimio Coalition subject to their internal processes,” said Omondi.
The key agenda was to set up a formula for identifying a single Presidential candidate and to receive preliminary report from the opposition technical committee led by former Cabinet Minister Kipruto arap Kirwa on the preferred choice name for their coalition.
The Council members were considering the proposal on whether to change and rebrand Azimio La Umoja Coalition One Party or to register a new coalition so as to ensure that they are ready for the next general election which they want to be a replica of the 2002 NARC win.
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties is yet to register name officials after Kalonzo was named as the new coalition leader taking over from Uhuru early this year in what some players alluded to some political machination intended to derail the coalition before the 2027 election.
Early this year Uhuru chaired a rare Azimio Council meeting and announced drastic leadership changes in the Coalition party, which pointed to a retired president who is warming up to another duel, though indirectly, with his former deputy, President William Ruto.
Uhuru appointed Kalonzo as the party leader replacing the late Raila Odinga and kicked out National Assembly Minority leader Junet Mohammed from the position of the Council's Secretary replacing him with Suba South MP Caroli Omondi.
The office of the Registrar of political parties, through its Chief Executive Officer, John Cox Lorionokou, acknowledged receipt of the resolutions in February this year and advised the party to publish the changes in line with section 20 of the Political Parties Act.
“This office acknowledges receipt of your letter dated February 2 on the joint meeting of the Azimio council and the national Executive Council submitting documents such as a notice dated January 29 convening the meeting, resolutions of the meeting, a letter dated February 2 to Junet on his removal from office, a statutory form PP7 on the change of officials and the attendance list,” the letter read from the Registrar of Political Parties.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula rejected attempts to replace Junet as the National Assembly Minority Leader, questioning the authenticity of the letter purportedly written by Kalonzo effecting the changes, saying it was full of typographical and grammatical errors.
"A review of the document casts serious doubt on its authenticity; it has several grammatical and typographical errors, including the duplication of one of the names of its purported author, specifically the document is signed by Kalonzo Kalonzo Musyoka; we don't know anybody by that name in this country," said Wetangula.
The Speaker also explained that the letter appointed Caroli Omondi as the leader of the Coalition Party Parliamentary Group, stating that this position does not exist in the Constitution, the State Law, or Parliamentary Standing Orders.
The coalition also announced changes in March within the Azimio National Coalition Executive Council, removing several members, including Cooperative Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya and Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.
Eldas MP Adan Keynan, Pokot South MP David Pkosing, Likoni MP Mishi Mboko, Garissa Senator Abdul Haji and East Africa Community Principal Secretary Caroline Karugu were also removed from the Azimio National Executive Council.
