Governor Wanga: 'Devolution a blessing to Homa Bay'

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has described the county’s hosting of the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations as a landmark moment in Kenya’s devolution journey, calling it a powerful testament to unity, partnership, and the potential of the Blue Economy.
“For the first time, we are hosting the event. The people of Homa Bay, who have only watched this national celebration on television, are now experiencing it first-hand,” she said.
Speaking during her address at the newly unveiled Homa Bay Stadium, Wanga lauded the national government for its investment in the region, including the 12,000-seater stadium, the ongoing dual carriageway linking Homa Bay to major towns, the expansion of Kabunde Airstrip, and upgrades to key roads within Homa Bay Town.
“These projects are a testament to your commitment to honor the promise. They will empower and dignify our women. The roads will open up the county and increase trade. Homabay offers an abundance of wonders,” she said.
Underscoring the event's theme - Harnessing Kenya’s Blue Economy for Sustainable Growth - Wanga highlighted Homa Bay’s strategic position on the shores of Lake Victoria, saying the region is poised to become a hub for fisheries, aquaculture, transport, and tourism.
“This event is truly a devolution blessing. It solidifies Homa Bay's place in Kenya's development narrative and celebrates the rich culture, resilience, and untapped potential of the Luo Nyanza region,” she declared.
Governor Wanga paid tribute to the region’s contributions to Kenya’s independence and leadership, naming heroes such as Tom Mboya, Otieno Kajwang, Gor Mahia, and Ojijo Otengo, and hailed Raila Odinga as "the father of devolution."
“As the stadium roars today, we remember and celebrate our heroes those who made self-rule possible and those who continue to defend our constitutional gains,” she said.
Wanga, the first female governor of the county which also holds the distinction of being the only one with a third of its elected leaders being women thanked the president for appointing sons of Homa Bay to key national positions.
