Fake magistrate in court for defrauding job seeker

A man who allegedly presented himself as a magistrate to a job seeker in one of the court stations has been charged.

Benard Kipkirui was arraigned before Milimani court Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi on Monday.

In one of the counts, he was accused that on April 24, 2024, at the Kaplong area within Bomet county with intent to defraud, he presented himself to Joan Chepkoech as be an employee of the Judiciary.

The charge sheet stated that he claimed to be a magistrate stationed at Nyahururu Law Courts.

In the second count, the accused was charged that between April 28, 2024 and May 3, 2024, in Nairobi central business district, with intent to defraud obtained Sh200,000 from Chepkoech.

The charge sheet stated that Kipkirui pretended that he was in a position to facilitate employment to Chepkoech as a clerk, a fact he knew to be false.

He denied the charges.

The accused's lawyer asked the court to grant him reasonable bail terms saying that he was not a flight risk and had affixed abode.

"Your honor the accused person has made attempts to reach a settlement with the complainant out of court," said his lawyer.

The prosecution told the magistrate that they were not opposed to the accused being released on bail.

Ekhubi released the accused on a bond of Sh150,000 or alternatively pay a cash bail of Sh100,000 and avail one contact person.

The case will be mentioned on May 14.
