With the flagging-off of the 72nd edition of WRC Safari Rally by President William Ruto in Nairobi this morning, a viewership of 100 million from 150 countries is expected globally. They'll do so through their television screens while those around Naivasha in Kenya will watch it live for the next four days. With an increase of 20 million people in viewership to total 100 million this time compared to last year's 80 million people, President Ruto said it had turned Kenya into a popular motorsports destination globally. "The global viewership of WRC Safari Rally has and will put Kenya as a pivotal sports tourism destination in the world of motorsports as they sample our cultural heritage," said the president when he flagged the rally cars at Nairobi City Hall way this morning. President Ruto said the WRC Safari Rally is undoubtedly one of the best global rallies that's always eagerly awaited in the world while the Hell's Gate Power Stage is among the most-watched
globally. Additionally, the famous Miti Mbili jump in Kedong is one of the most iconic images in the WRC rally world. The Head of State observed that since 1953, the WRC Safari Rally has been a key part of Kenya's sporting heritage and a pillar of Kenya's sports tourism. "Therefore, hosting this event - the only FIA World Rally Championship leg in Africa - is a win-win for Kenya and the continent. I assure the FIA and WRC that the government remains committed to supporting this event now and in the future," said the Head of State. However, he said they are equally out to create more opportunities for young Kenyans to participate in motorsports. As a result, the government will support the FIA's Affordable Cross Car Project, which aims to develop motorsport talent globally. " I thank the FIA for providing free design blueprints for these cars, and encouraging local manufacturing while minimising costs," he said The President urged Kenya Motorsports Federation (KMSF) to collaborate with the Technical and Vocational Training Authority to make local production a reality.
And he was pleased to learn that the WRC Safari Rally Project has initiated discussions with the Toyota Gazoo Racing team to train Kenyan drivers and mechanics. While urging Kenyans and visitors to stay safe during the four-day- motorsports extravaganza, President Ruto appealed to them (visitors) to tour Naivasha and the rally routes to sample Kenya's tourism and cultural heritage. He wished all drivers well in the rally championships. Meanwhile, President Ruto assured local drivers led by 21-year-old Tinashe Gatimu of the entire country's moral support.
