Kobala Mixed recaptured their girls' football title yesterday as this year’s Nyanza Region secondary schools Term Two B games ended yesterday at Homa Bay High School.

Kanga High School were crowned boys' football champions, while Sengera SDA (boys) and St Anne’s Sega (girls) retained their volleyball titles.

Kobala battled to a 3-1 victory over last year's winners Nyakach in post-match penalties after their clash ended in a barren draw. Captain Yvonne Ogada, Maximiller Robi and Evon Akinyi were on target for Kobala, while Mercy Akoth scored for Nyakach. Walid Ouma scored Kanga’s all-important goal against Magadi in extra time.

It was the end of the road for East Africa boys' football champions Barding, who lost to St Ignatius Loyola Magadi Mixed in the semis. Barding went down 5-6 in post-match penalties after their early morning duel ended in a goalless stalemate.

Their semifinals tie was delayed after Magadi appealed against Our Lady Of Mercy Rings Boys.

Magadi won the appeal, bringing to six the number of teams that have been suspended during the three-day regional event.

Barding coach Thadeus Wanjir said the long delay might have had a negative impact on his players.

“My players were ready for the semis on Wednesday, but were kept waiting. The uncertainty might have contributed to the outcome of the game. But still, I congratulate Magadi for their deserved victory. They were worthy opponents," said Wanjir.

Sengera of Kisii County won their two round-robin matches against Chianda of Siaya and Oruba Mixed of Migori to extend their reign.

Having earned a ticket to the national games, Sengera will be seeking to improve on their last year's fourth-place finish. Chianda finished second, while Oruba completed the podium in third.

Meanwhile, Sega laboured to a 3-1 victory over Sengera in the girls' final. The Siaya County girls, who also finished fourth nationally last year after losing 3-0 to former national and East Africa champions Lugulu, took the first set 25-17.

Sengera came back stronger to snatch the second 22-25 and set stage for the four-set thriller. With their trophy and national slot at stake, Sega fought hard to take the third 25-19, before sealing victory with a 25-14 score.

Lwak beat Dede 3-1.
