Veteran central Kenya lady golfer Joyce Wanjiru played her heart out to defeat a team of 150 golfers and win the 2016 Njenga Karume Cup at the par 72 Kiambu course on Saturday.

Wanjiru, playing handicap 5, posted a sterling five over par 77 gross to claim victory in the tournament sponsored by Mount Kenya University and the late Karume’s family.

Despite playing a horrible triple bogey shot on the par four-ninth hole, the home golfer recovered to sink three rare birdies at the par three-fourth, par five-11th and par four-14th holes, before she added eight level pars and played bogey shots on the rest of the 18 holes to take the lead in the nine-hole course.

“My putting and swings were accurate and it was just my day,” said Wanjiru.

Club mate handicap 14 George Muiruri was the men's winner on 68 nett. Handicap 10 Joseph Ndegwa finished second with a two-stroke difference.

Margaret Nyambura, also from the club and playing off handicap 36, was the Lady winner on 69 nett, while club mate handicap 23 Grace Kibe was second on 74 nett.

At the Par 72 Leisure Lodge Resort course in Kwale, home club’s handicap 28 Toney Venturini was the overall winner on a count back score of 35 points during the 2016 Prime Bank tournament on Saturday.

He tied on the same points with handicap 20 Bush Cheryl in the second spot, while handicap 25 Gansham Patel Kumar, also from the club, was third with 33 points.
