Zlatan Ibrahimovic has hinted his move to Manchester United could be off after telling Malmo fans that he would be back at his boyhood club.

The mercurial striker is wanted by Jose Mourinho as his first big-name arrival after taking over as manager last week.

Ibrahimovic hinted in a recent press conference that he had been offered a deal from United but offered no indication as to whether he was going to accept the move.

The 34-year-old was back in his hometown for Sweden's Euro 2016 warm-up with Slovenia on Monday evening and spoke to fans following the game.

He told fans: "I love Malmo and I wish I could play today. I apologise for that, but I will, I will. Just wait for me."

Ibrahimovic played no part in the 0-0 draw because of a calf injury but is expected to be fit in time for the Euro opener against the Republic of Ireland on June 13.

Meanwhile, United legend Roy Keane has urged his former club to do all they can to land Ibrahimovic.

Ibrahimovic has won league titles in Holland, Italy, Spain and France and Keane sees him as a 'big player' who could help Jose Mourinho return the title to United.

“I think he would be a good signing on a one-year deal,” Keane said on ITV.

“He is a big player, a big character.

"I have said that United have been lacking a few characters and he would be a good fit there.”

Peter Schmeichel has agreed with his former skipper, saying Zlatan was 'born' to pull on the United kit.

"This guy finds whatever the crowd needs," Schmeichel said. "This guy was born to play for Manchester United."
