Most of us have had to cancel plans or take off from work because of a toothache. This is one of the most common ailments and it can happen at any time of the day.  The excruciating pain can bring even the strongest to their knees.

It’s necessary to know a few home remedies in case you do not have access to a dentist or need quick relief from the pain. From a cold compress to vanilla extract, here are some ways you can relieve a toothache at home.

  1. Salt water

Gaggling salt water to relieve a toothache is the go-to home remedy for many people since it’s highly effective. Salt water is a natural disinfectant which kills bad bacteria in the mouth that cause infections. Additionally, it reduces inflammation and loosens food particles stuck in the teeth. Next time you have a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm salt water.

  1. Ginger

Ginger is a well-known pain reliever and it’s used to soothe common ailments including toothaches. Apart from being an effective pain reliever, its anti-inflammatory properties are useful in maintaining oral health. By preventing bacteria buildup on the teeth and gums, ginger lowers the risk of inflammatory diseases like gingivitis and generally strengthens the gum tissues and teeth.

  1.  Vanilla extract

Vanilla extract can be found on many homes as it is a common ingredient in an array of dishes. It’s mainly used to sweeten dishes. However, it has many health benefits thanks to its antibacterial and antioxidant properties. One of those benefits is that it works like magic for toothaches. Simply, apply some vanilla extract on a cotton ball and dab on the affected area and you’ll be good in no time.

  1. Teabags

One of the oldest home remedies for a toothache is a cool teabag. Since time immemorial, people have used the tannic acid found in tea leaves to relieve pain. Black and green tea are especially effective in pain relief since they contain higher amounts of tannic acid. Some teas also contain herbs like chamomile which numb pain. place a wet teabag where the pain is and let it sit for a few minutes.

  1. Onions

As a natural antiseptic, onions have the power to kill bacteria in the mouth that cause infection and pain. this is why it’s important to add onions to your diet. When you experience a toothache, take a raw piece of onion and chew it. If you can’t chew it, place a few pieces on the affected area and let it sit. Make sure the juice penetrates the tooth to kill the bacteria.

  1. Cold compress

One of the easiest ways to reduce inflammation and in turn, relieve a toothache is to apply a cold compress. The cool temperature soothes the ailment and reduces swelling in the affected area. This is an easy remedy since you can use any item in the fridge including frozen foods, cutlery or ice cubes. Make sure you use a cloth to protect your skin from injury.
