Lakers Hockey Club's five-match unbeaten run ended last Sunday after losing narrowly 1-0 to Dutch Flower Girls (DFG) Wolverines in the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women's Premier League match played at Kisumu Day High School grounds.

Cynthia Owino scored the winner in the 49th minute to guide the visitors to victory at foreign territory.

Speaking after the win, Wolverines head coach Dennis Owoka commended his team for adapting early in the match and securing an important victory.

"We watched Lakers play Amira Sailors and took key lessons on what were their strengths and weaknesses which we capitalized on fully by marking their two star players while waiting patiently to punish them when they made one mistake at the back," said Owoka.

The former Kenyan international and Butali Warriors coach said they are keen to build on this win as they eye to turn their poor start to the season around.

"It's our second win of the season and this win will go a long way to motivate the team that they can turn around their poor start to the season," he said.

Wolverines are sixth after six rounds with six points they got from their two wins. They have lost four matches.

On the other hand, Lakers remain second on the log despite the defeat with 11 points, four behind former champions Blazers who sit top of the eight-team league.

On Saturday, Lakers edged Amira Sailors 2-0. Captain Alice Owiti and reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP) player Aurelia Opondo scored a goal each.

Defending champions Strathmore University Scorpions also have 11 points but are third by numerical positioning as they tied on goal difference (7goals) and points with Lakers. They have both won three matches, drawn twice and lost once.
