Little-known Agenga Mixed shock Sinyolo as giants Kisumu Day fall

Agenga Mixed Secondary School on Friday sent shockwaves throughout the vast Nyanza Region after knocking out five-time East Africa champions Sinyolo Girls in the semifinals of the girl's hockey played at Cardinal Otunga, Mososcho in Kisii.

Velma Achieng scored the winning goal in the last quarter to send the Migori County champions to the finals where they will face off against defending champions Nyamira Girls. Nyamira schooled Lwak Girls 7-0.

Speaking after the win, Agenga hockey head coach Aloice Owino praised his charges for showing character, belief and confidence in themselves.

"It's a great day for Agenga. Congratulations to not only the players but also the technical bench who all put in work to get us here. I strongly believed that we can do it after last year's semifinals feat and am glad we are in the finals," said Owino who doubles as the Deputy Principal of the school.

Owino who formerly coached Sinyolo Girls said they will be ready for the finals against the free-scoring Nyamira Girls.

"It's a tough one to be truthful because they have very great experienced players who have been playing together for the past 3-4 years.

"However, we will be prepared as Agenga. Yes it's been two years of hockey at our school but the girls have really shown that they want to not only play the game but win matches. We will try our best," said the former Lakers Hockey Club coach.

In the boy's category, defending champions Kisumu Day were sent home packing alongside Sinyolo Girls in the semifinals.

Ishmael Opiyo's short corner goal in the first half was enough to edge Kisumu Day in a repeat of the Kisumu County finals that Maseno also won 1-0.

Maseno will now face off against Nduru Boys from Kisii in the finals. Nduru defeated Cardinal Otunga 1-0.
