Nyamira, St Joseph Kitale and Sinyolo Girls reign supreme in hockey

Nyamira Girls won the Siaya County Secondary Schools hockey girls title for a record eigth consecutive time on Saturday at St Mary's Yala which hosted the Term One county games.

This is after Nyamira won all their round-robin matches against Ng'iya Girls, Lwak Girls, Nyamira Girls and Nyawara Girls.

The Nyanza Region hockey champions thumped Lwak Girls 6-0 before seeing off Mbaga Girls 2-0 to remain top of the five-group team which also consists of Ngiya Girls and Nyawara Girls.

Laureen Auma scored five goals as Judith Omondi sealed their win over Lwak Girls.

On Thursday, Nyamira got off to a perfect start after edging out newbies Ngiya Girls 4-0.

They finished off Mbaga Girls 2-0 and Nyawara 3-0.

In the boy's category, St Mary's Yala retained their title also after defeating Sawagongo in penalties flicks.

In Kisumu, five-time East Africa champions Sinyolo Girls and Maseno School emerged tops.

Sinyolo Girls retained their title after seeing of Kisumu Girls 3-0 in penalty strokes after their match ended 1-1 in regular time in the finals staged at Chemelil Academy.

On the other hand, Nyanza regional champions Kisumu Day lost their county title to Maseno School who edged them 2-1 also in penalty strokes after the match ended 0-0.

Speaking after their win, Sinyolo Girls head coach Peter Wangla said they have shifted their focus to the regional games slated for next month in Kisii.

Wangala said they are targeting to reclaim their lost regional title. Nyamira Girls saw off Sinyolo 2-1 to win the Nyanza hockey gong last year in Homa Bay.

"It's been a good show for us where we have learnt of areas to improve on and known our capabilities ahead of the regionals. It was a tough final for us but am glad we won," said Wangla.

In Trans Nzoia County, St Jospeh Kitale Girls reclaimed the county hockey title after five years when they saw of St Mark's Girls 1-0 in the finals.

Defending Trans Nzoia County and national champions hockey girls Trans Nzoia Mixed were knocked out in the sub-county level.

National boy's hockey champions St Anthony's Boys Kitale also progressed to the regional's after retaining its title when they defeated Bwake Secondary 2-1.

In Migori County, Agenga Mixed and Kanyawanga Secondary will represent the county in the regionals as Ringa Boys and Andigo Girls represent Homa Bay County.
