Former East African hockey champions Sinyolo Girls advanced to the finals of this year’s Kisumu County school games after humiliating Rae Girls 13-0 in the semi-finals played at Maseno School yesterday.

Mitchele Akoth scored five goals with Millicent Jane adding a brace as the Kisumu West sub-county representatives handed head coach Aloice Owino a breather with pressure mounting on them to return to the national arena.

Owino said he has his eyes set on qualifying for the Nyanza regional games. “We have been playing well since day one and to qualify for the finals with that huge victory is a plus for the girls who need that long lost confidence after the last two years’ disappointments of missing to reach the national arena," he said after the win.

Kisumu Boys picked from where they left after thrashing Ngere Boys 11-0 and handing Ogada Boys another 15-0 humiliation in the boy’s hockey category as Nyabondo edged out defending champions 1-0.

In Siaya County, Nyanza region hockey girl’s champions, Nyamira Girls are one step from reaching the regional games after defeating Lwak Girls 2-0 and Mbaga Girls 3-0.

Nyamira will qualify by winning their last match against Sinaga. “We are looking forward to returning to the Nyanza games and defending our title.

“This is why we are playing very hard with an aim of improving on our last year’s performances,” Nyamira head coach Eliakim Obondo said.
