Kenya has called for enhanced global collaboration in tackling the misuse of controlled substances, urging further evaluation of drugs posing public health risks.

Speaking at the 68th Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna, Austria on Wednesday, March 12, Saku MP Dido Raso reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to stringent substance control measures.

"Kenya appreciates and honours the treaty-mandated role of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) in identifying and researching substances while assessing their impact on human health," said Raso.

He endorsed recommendations from WHO and INCB reports on substances with adverse health effects, stating Kenya remained vigilant in monitoring drugs under surveillance.

"Upon review of the report and in light of their adverse effects, Kenya supports the recommendations and commits to being on alert for all substances categorised for surveillance," he noted.

Raso raised concerns over the rising misuse of pharmaceuticals such as Tramadol and Ketamine, substances increasingly prevalent in Kenya and other regions.

"While I have the floor, I wish to urge WHO once again to consider further evaluation of Tramadol and continue discussions on Ketamine, whose use and misuse are on the rise," he noted.

He also highlighted the growing trend of veterinary medicines such as Xylazine being used in drug mixtures, calling for WHO guidance on control measures.

"We have further witnessed the increased use of veterinary medicines such as Xylazine in making drug mixtures. We call on WHO for further review and advice on control measures," he added.

Kenya's advocacy aligns with global efforts to combat drug misuse and its consequences.

The 68th CND serves as a key forum for international drug policy discussions, providing a platform for member states to share strategies for addressing substance-related challenges
