Everton midfielder Aaron Lennon has been detained by police under the Mental Health Act.

The England winger was found by the side of the road by police on Sunday, as reported by BBC Sport, and was taken to hospital for examination.

A statement by police confirmed that Lennon, who has not played for his club for the past two months with an undisclosed issue, had been taken into custody for his own safety.

It is believed police officers approached the £4m former England midfielder, and negotiated with him for 20 minutes before taking him to hospital.

Lennon, who has 21 Three Lions caps, was picked up by police roughly 30 minutes after his side lost 3-0 to Chelsea at Goodison.

Lennon's representative, Base Soccer Agency, tweeted: "Everyone at Base Soccer sends their support to @AaronLennon12 - get well soon and stay strong."

There was a social media outpouring in support of Lennon.
