Chelsea are reportedly close to signing Bayer Leverkusen winger Kai Havertz after the two clubs agreed a fee for the player.

The Blues have already splashed the cash since the turn of the year, with attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech joining for a fee of £36m from Ajax and striker Timo Werner following suit in a £53m deal from RB Leipzig.

And 21-year-old Havertz, who impressed in the Bundesliga this season with 12 goals and six assists, could well be the next big-money purchase through the door in the near future.

According to The Athletic the deal is likely to be worth up to an eyewatering £72m, and it is believed Chelsea faced little competition for his signature due to his high valuation.

The player is initially thought to have favoured a move to Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants are not currently in a financial position to be able to afford him.

Havertz's representatives and those of Chelsea will now work on the personal terms of his contract, but it is not thought there should be any hold-up, with the Blues more than capable of matching his wage demands.

The addition of Havertz would add yet another dimension to what already looks a fearsome attacking threat at Stamford Bridge as the club make up for lost time after not signing any players in the last two transfer windows.

Havertz announced his intentions to leave Leverkusen last month, with the player known to feel he is ready for a new challenge.

He is also keen to play in the Champions League after failing to inspire his side to qualify for next season's competition, and Chelsea look well-placed to finish in the top four.

It remains to be seen how quickly things move from here, but it certainly seems like there are exciting times ahead for all Blues fans.
