KGU launches Kenya Swing tournament series

Kenya Golf Union (KGU) has announced the launch of the Kenya Swing Tournaments, which kick off next weekend in Nairobi. The three-event series will commence with the 12th edition of Kabete Open, which was postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Defending champion Adel Balala claimed the tournament's hat-trick last year, having won it back-to-back in 2021 and 2022, and again in 2024.

Hungry for the bragging rights and a share of the prizes, the field will be limited to 156 players with a verifiable World Handicap System Index of 15.0 and under at the close of entry, with the event taking place on July 18-20 at the Vet Lab Sports Club course.

The format shall be a 54-hole strokeplay, and shall be played over three rounds of 18 holes each day, based on gross scores.

Making the announcement, Chris Kinuthia, Chairman, KGU, said, "As a union, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the Kenya Swing series, which not only reinforces our commitment to growing the sport but also establishes Kenya as a regional golf powerhouse.

"The series serve as a launchpad for talent, development, and other tournaments. We are excited to welcome international talent to our shores. We believe that by hosting these events, we can showcase the best of Kenyan golf while nurturing the next generation of players."

This event will be followed by the 103rd edition of the Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship, a fiercely competitive event that emphasises strategic play and mental toughness, to be held at Sigona Golf Club from July 24-27.

The series will then head back to Vet Lab to conclude with the 48th Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship, which will be used to determine the season's top amateur and also provide a comprehensive assessment of consistency and skill from the players.

Both the Kenya Amateur and Strokeplay champions will earn an automatic slot to play in the 2026 Magical Kenya Open, subject to meeting all KGU and DP World Tour amateur entry requirements.
