Home golfer James Kariuki returned triumphantly from a lengthy sabbatical to secure victory at The Murdoch University Open - Clubnite on Wednesday at the picturesque par-71 Muthaiga Golf Club course.
This impressive performance came amidst a backdrop of reflection and mourning for the club members, following the recent passing of one of their esteemed long-serving members, Senior Counsel Judy Thongori.
In a heartfelt tribute, Club Captain Eric Malonza requested that all attendees at the prize-giving dinner observe a minute of silence in her memory, reminding everyone of the cherished legacy she left behind.
Kariuki, the talented winner of the event, was filled with joy as he reflected on his remarkable achievement of shooting a round total of 66 nett, playing off a handicap of 28.
"I had put my clubs away since November due to the holidays, and today was my first time back to test my swing and see if I could still connect with the ball," he shared, his smile radiating excitement and accomplishment.
His impressive round edged out second-place contender, Njuguna Ndungu, who completed his game with a score of 67 nett, thus denying him the top honor by a mere stroke.
In the ladies' category, Nancy Ndungu showcased her skills by winning with an impressive score of 69 nett, finishing ahead of the Vice Lady Captain, Beatrice Soy, who also had a commendable round.
The competition was fierce, but it was clear that the athletes brought their A-game to the course.
Meanwhile, John Gitonga, with his methodical play, secured the Gross prize by accumulating an impressive 74 gross points, demonstrating that consistency and precision are key in the sport.
Young golfer Allan Muthonjia also shone brightly during the event, claiming the Junior prize with a score of 100 nett off a handicap of 24, proving that talent knows no age limit.
The competition for the Nines was spirited as well, with Anthony Saiti and Adil Suleman emerging victorious with scores of 30 and 29 ett, respectively. These scores underscored the depth of talent present in the tournament.
At the ceremony, Conor Murphy, Regional Manager for Murdoch University, took the opportunity to encourage attendees to consider the enriching educational experiences available in Perth, Australia.

In addition to being a competitive golf outing, the event served as an appreciation ceremony for the Nairobi District League Foursomes Champions, Khushil Nathwani and Neer Chandaria, congratulating them for their exceptional achievements in the league.
Looking ahead, Club Captain Malonza extended a warm invitation to golfers for the upcoming Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) Chairman Jane Babsa Nzibo prize to be played on January 31 - February 1.
He promised an exciting golf outing filled with camaraderie, competition, and the chance to celebrate the spirit of the game, enticing both newcomers and seasoned players to participate in what is sure to be an engaging and enjoyable day on the course.
