Home golfer William Kaguta closed the year in glory after braving the harsh Coastal heat to register the best course score at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course in Mombasa County yesterday.

While others complained of the terrible heat, the handicap 0, Kaguta, returned a level par 71 gross to emerge the Best Gross winner of the End of the Year Golf tournament.

"I am completely humbled and thrilled to be the winner despite playing under this unfavourable Coastal weather today. But it was all about, hope, determination, and execution by the right skills on the course which is playing well and in good condition. And to me, this is my best end-of-the-year gift and I hope 2024 will be a much better golfing period," said Kaguta.

The day-long 18-hole tournament organised by the club to appreciate its members and other golfers attracted 147 golfers.

Natallia Herter playing off handicap 47 was the Men winner on 41 points while handicap 16 Truphena Oyaro finished second on a count back score of 40 points after tying on the same score with third-placed handicap 31 General (Retired) P.M.Kariuki.

The junior winner on 27 points was handicap 27 Shay Chauhan, while handicap 20 John Smith returned 34 points to walk home with the Best Senior Prize.

Handicap 15 Joel Mochanga claimed the Guest winner prize after registering 37 points as handicap 25 Detan Ondiek with 24 points and handicap 24 Christopher Hanlin on 23 points were the best first and Second nines winners respectively.

Club Captain Dinesh Sasan said they were happy for the big turnout during this festive holiday and promised a busy calendar of events throughout this year.

"As I wish you all a happy New Year 2024, kindly be prepared because the Club has lined up a busy calendar with lots of events beginning this January," said Sasan.

Most clubs across the country start off their events this January after a festive break, The Safari Tour will be at Sigona Golf Club where the Pro-am will be played on Saturday followed by the main event on January 7-10.

Coast Golfers led by KGU Coast Representative Eric Nyongesa have welcomed the return of the Diani Beach Masters scheduled to be played at the Diani's Diamond Leisure Beach Resort Golf Club in South Coast of Mombasa, Kwale County from 16th to 20th October.

This event is among the 27 series in this year's KGU Calendar of events to be played across the Country culminating with the Nyali Open at Nyali Golf and Country Club in December.
