The par-72 Machakos Golf Club will this weekend play host to the sixth edition of the ICEA LION King of the Course 2023 series formerly known as Year Opener Golf Tournament.

In 2022, the series was played at seven clubs across the country having kicked off at its traditional venue, Machakos Golf Club with the grand finale being hosted at Nyali Golf and Country Club.

The 2023 series kicks off in Machakos Golf Club today.

A field of over 150 golfers have been drawn up for the day long tourney to be played under stableford scoring for g format, off full handicap with an array of prices to be won courtesy of the sponsor, ICEA Lion Group.

"Despite the erratic weather conditions the course is in good shape," said Peter Kimatu, Captain Machakos Golf Club. The highlight of this meet, unlike in the past, all winners from 2022 participating clubs will be battling it out in the Machakos debut.

"The 2022 Winners from Machakos Golf Club, Thika Greens Golf Resort, Ruiru Sports Club, Nanyuki Sports, Nandi Bears Club and Nyali Golf and Country Club will grace the occasion," said Joe Mboya, Convenor Captain for the series.

To spice up the tournament, several pros and juniors have been invited and will be participating in this year's events.

In January, after Machakos leg, the series is set to move to Thika Greens on January 13 for an 18-hole Club night curtain-raising before Ruiru Golf Club hosts a corporate golf which is expected to have over 250 golfers participating on January 14. From Ruiru the series heads to the picturesque, 9-hole, Nanyuki Sports Club on January 28 then Nandi Bears Club in May before the grand finale in Nyali in October. [Mose Sammy]
