Home player Caroline Muthoni is the winner of 2022 Ministry of Foreign Affairs annual golf tournament held at the par 72 Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club in Nairobi on Friday.

The handicap 29 golfer fired 18 in the opening nine and 26 in the last nine to emerge champion on 44 stable ford points.

The 44-year-old mother of four said she had a good start which made her so relaxed on the course that has challenging dams and taxing bunkers.

“In golf, company is everything. I felt at ease with my group. I kept my eyes on the ball and I was focused on every shot that I made,” she said.

Muthoni played some 18-hole competitions in preparation for the tournament that was graced by Kenyan diplomats, High Commissioners, international players and local professional golfers.

“I did two rounds of 18 holes at Windsor and the last one at Thika Greens where I gauged my fitness for the championships.

“When you play a good game, your body adapts to the swings. And that is the reason I decided to train at Thika Greens, which is quite challenging. “Such a preparation instilled confidence in me ahead of the competition,” he said.

Muthoni said the victory inspires her. “It gives me great confidence that I am a great player,” she said.

She appreciated sponsors of the Diplomatic Golf Tournament, which included Standard Group Plc for a well organised tournament. Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo presided over the showpiece.

“It was a beautiful day. I enjoyed the game because of the high level of players that took part in the championships,” Muthoni said.

Muthoni was introduced to the sport by her husband Bill Kagai in 2013 but only started playing actively in 2021.

She has managed to lower her handicap from 40 to 20. “I have improved on my fitness. This week, I have trekked 40km 18 hole game translates into 10km walking on the course,” she says.

Other tournaments she has won at Windsor this season include several Club Nites, Ladies Section Championships and Ladies Open Better Ball.

In the next five years, Muthoni longs to lower her handicap to below ten.

Omamo said the championships was a culmination of a one week conference for Kenyan ambassadors and High Commissioners who gathered in Nairobi.

She thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for supporting roles of diplomats.
