Three Kenyan golfers are set for this year’s Lagos Open Golf Championship to be played at the par 71 Ikoyi Club 1938 in Nigeria from tomorrow.

The event’s 2018 champion Samuel Njoroge, from Kenya Railway Golf Club, Kenya’s number three John Lejirma also of Kenya Railway and top Lady golfer Naomi Wafula, from Golf Park, will be among the top golfers who will be battling for top honours in the tournament that will end on Sunday.

Wafula and Njoroge left for Nigeria last Saturday, while Lejirma departs today.

“My aim in Lagos is to finish among the top five players since it will be my first time to take part in the tournament. I have also been going through hard times with no specific sponsor,” said Lejirma yesterday.

The First Bank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship is one of the international golf events where all amateur golfers worldwide can participate and amass points to aid their World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).

This year’s edition has attracted over 350 top golfers from the amateur scene.

First Bank Nigeria Limited Chief Executive Officer Adeola Adeduntan said the event will also see the past winners play with invited amateur guests and will receive a cash prize kitty of US$5,000.00 (Sh600,000) as well as trophies and other prizes as a “Roll of Honour”.

Meanwhile Lejirma, who is the 2020 Uganda Open Champion, will not defend the title.

The Uganda Open will begin tomorrow at the par 71 Entebbe Golf Club.
