Golf Park’s David Wakhu carded a round total of 284 gross at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club, Mombasa, to win the first leg of the Safari Tour series yesterday.

Wakhu broke away from a three-way third-place battle with Windsor’s Rizwan Charania and Muthaiga’s Greg Snow on Tuesday by hitting an impressive six under par 65 gross in the final round yesterday to set a new course record.

The golfer, who claimed the winner’s Sh150,000 out of the Sh1million prize kitty, sunk an eagle, two birdies on top of eight level pars against mixed bogey shots on the rest of the holes in both nines to lead the board.

“I played an easy game under good conditions. I believe the Tour will help us prepare well for the Kenya  Open,”said Wakhu.

Day three leader Dismas Indiza of Mumias fell off the lead by three strokes to pocket Sh100,000 after playing a four over par 75 gross for a round total of 287 gross.

“It was a tough day but congratulations to Wakhu. He played well and deserved the victory,” said Indiza.

Riz Charania and day one and two leader Eric Ooko tied for the third place with a score of 288 gross and collected Sh77,500 each.

The Safari Tour now moves to the Vet Lab Sports Club from September 1 where professional golfers will compete for another Sh1 million pot.
