COOL, CALM AND COLLECTED: Kaguta’s back-to-back birdies steer him to victory at Nyali golf course

Home golfer William Kaguta’s back-to-back rare birdies in the first two holes steered him to victory in the Johnnie Walker 2016 November Mug golf tournament over the weekend.
Playing off handicap 3, the golfer returned home with an excellent score of 70 nett for victory in Division One during the one-day event at the par 71 Nyali golf and Country Club in Mombasa.
“I knew it was my day after sinking the first two birdie and it’s a great win for me,” said Kaguta.
In both nines, the golfer started off by sinking a back-to-back birdie on the par five-first and par four-second holes, rolled 13 level pars and played mixed bogey shots in the rest.
Clubmate Ian Marshall, playing off handicap 16, was the Division Two winner on 73 nett. He tied on points with handicap 21 Michael Mbugua, winner of Division Three.
The Club’s Lady Captain Teresia Odoo, playing off handicap 14, was the Division One winner on 70 nett and clubmate Pia Swatton scored 73 nett to win in Division Two.
In Thika, Kim Nderitu won the 2016 Lady Captain’s tournament on 36 points (21-15), while Joseph Gachomba was the Men winner with 35 points (17-18).
Betty Ndenderu, on 33 points (18-15), won the Lady prize and D. Masindano was the Guest winner on 31 points (15-16). Simon Ngugi on a score of 32 points (16-16), won the junior prize.
Home club’s handicap 24 Kerry Venturini, on 69 nett, won the 2016 Strokes Play Competition at par 72 Leisure Lodge Resort Course. Peter Ada, playing off handicap 10, was second, while Stan Kinsch, also from the same club and playing off handicap 10, finished third on a score of 70 nett.
In Kisii, handicap 16 Dusmas Mokua won the 2016 Toyota Kenya tournament on 39 points, while handicap 8 George Mainye was runner-up.
Meanwhile, Ephantus Mate posted a superb round of 37 (20+17) stableford points to win the Mary Mungai golf tournament overall title at par 72 Nyeri golf club on Saturday.
The Nyeri-based gynecologist, playing off handicap 12, said;
“I am happy I played last, which enabled me to collect all the pars, buddies and birdies and that is how I won the tournament”.
Wahome Paragon shot a hole in one on par-3, hole 12 which plays 146 yards using a nine iron.
The last time a golfer holed out an ace was eight years ago. After the win, Wahome offered to sponsor a golf tournament for caddies.
George Muraguri, playing off handicap 15, took the Men prize on 36 (17+19) stableford points, Club Captain Bishop Jacob Kamere was Men second on an identical score of 36 (18+18) stableford points, while Kenneth Chege was Men's third on 34 (16+18) stableford points.
