Fresh from winning the NIC Golf Series last weekend, Charles Aburi has shifted focus on the inaugural ICEA Lion Group Golf Series title.

Aburi says he is ready to ward off stiff opposition from seasoned golfers at the ICEA LION series which tees off at The ICEA Lion Series tee off  at the par 70 Nyanza Golf Club this weekend.

“It feels great to have won the NIC Gold Series title and I want to focus on how to win the ICEA Lion trophy too. However, winning the ICEA Lion series title will depend on how hard I work,” Aburi said.

The Kisii-based golfer beat a field of 76 golfers drawn from Nandi, Mumias, Kakamega, Nyanza, Muthaiga and Railway golf clubs and managed a total of 39 stableford points to lift the NIC Series title last weekend at the Nyanza Golf Club.

Last year’s NIC Series  winner, Maurice Otieno, has promised to give a strong challenge against Aburi. Another prolific golfer, Rana Sultan, who finished fourth at the series, has also promised to use all at his disposal to clinch the ICEA Lion Group Golf title.

Tough tournament

“It is going to be a tough tournament considering that top golfers will be drawn from across the country. It is a great initiative from the ICEA Lion Group and I urge them to spread their wings as we seek to make golf a popular sport,” said Rana.

The recently merged group, which comprises ICEA Lion General Insurance Company Ltd (previously Lion of Kenya Insurance Company Ltd) and ICEA Lion Life Assurance Company Ltd (previously Insurance Company of East Africa Ltd), will be sponsoring the series in various parts of the country with Nyanza Club as the first stop.

Their major focus is to build strong relationships with all stakeholders in all parts of the country as they create awareness about their products.

“We plan to spread our golf series to all parts of the country  to  enable us reach as many clients as possible and at the same time help the game of golf grow,” said ICEA Lion Chief Executive Officer General Insurance Steven Oluoch.

Nyanza Golf Club chairman Daniel Ajulu thanked ICEA LION Group for choosing the cub as their first stop.
