Golfers ready to tee off for glory at Eldoret Club

Nathan Tororei has diligently served the par 71 Eldoret Club as captain for two years now.
His tenure will end on Saturday, when he will hand over the mantle after the second leg of the 2022 Standard County Golf Classic series that will be held on the club’s lush green course.
Tororei is determined to exit the scene in style; at least with victory during the tournament.
It is on this note that he has been combing the fairways and greens in the course to perfect his shots, putts and chips ahead of Saturday’s event.
He is also spending time on the range hitting over 200 balls per day to align his long shots for the tees.
“Through the intensive training I have had, I believe I’m now a strong contender for the overall prize,” Tororei told Standard Sports.
“I have been practising on the course extensively this week, my form has improved. I’m confident I have great potential to carry the day at the weekend,” he said.
Tororei took part in last season’s series at the club in October but his results were not encouraging. He is hopeful he will post impressive scores this time round.
More than 100 players are expected to take part in the event, according to the ongoing registration.
“Already, we have entries from clubs like Nandi Bears, Kitale and Njoro,” Tororei said.
Apart from the captain, other hard-hitters to watch include the leg’s defending champion, Wesley Kiprono, who is out to defend his title, handicap 13 Mercy Karonei and Esther Chumo Barorot whose form is currently impeccable.
Barorot heads to the tournament inspired by her victory in the Western Ladies Open series in Kericho.
She was also second in the circuit in Nyanza and Kakamega and was the winner in the Eldoret contest.
“I challenge the golfers to bring their ‘A’ game because there will be lots of exciting prizes to be won,” Tororei said.
Prizes include vouchers for two nights for two, a dinner for two and a kingly spa treatment that are offered by hospitality providers Eka Hotel, Eldoret.
Local carrier Jambojet has also offered various destination tickets to be won.
Other sponsors on board include Space and Style, which is a manufacturer of the innovative Asili roofing tiles, water harvesting and distribution solutions and FMD East Africa, which is a distributer of farm machinery.
At the same time, Tororei has warned players to expect tough challenges in holes 3, 4 and 5 which are beside a river.
“Hole 9 is surrounded by a bunker and several trees,” he said.
“Hole 4 is a dog-leg, while hole 10 has a narrow fairway which is sandwiched between a river on the left and a forest on the right making precision a priority rather than distance,” he added.
Golfers should expect fair weather during the tournament as it is currently sunny in Eldoret.
“We are working on the greens, which we will be cut to international standards,” he said.
