Kisumu County’s Agai High School and Kobala Mixed Secondary School from Homa Bay are the new Nyanza Region football champions.

Agai humbled Kisumu Boys High School 2-0 at Moi Stadium to be crowned champions of Nyanza, dethroning Koderobara High School from Migori County. Koderobara failed to make the regional finals after losing at the county level.

On the other hand, Kobala Mixed dethroned Alara Girls, also from Homa Bay, after defeating archrivals Saye Girls in post-match penalties.

St Mary’s School Yala were declared the new Nyanza Region basketball 3x3 boys’ champions after coming from behind to stun St Joseph Rapogi Boys 18-16 in a tense final played at Kisumu Girls basketball courts Saturday.

The Siaya County champions, who were gracing the finals at the regionals for the first time, proved every doubter wrong after flooring heavyweights from the preliminary stages to the final.

Speaking after the win, Yala coach Leonard Okuku was impressed with how his boys never gave up despite trailing by two baskets with 30 seconds left.

The immediate former Sawagongo basketball coach believes the school has a lot to give ahead of national finals in Kakamega next month.

“Congratulations to the boys for making the school proud. We really wanted to win despite having booked the ticket to nationals after our semi-finals win against Nyanchwa.

“The job is not yet done now as we fight for East Africa,” said Okuku.

Rapogi will also join Yala at the nationals despite finishing second.

In the girls’ category, Siaya County giants Ng'iya Girls retained their title after edging out archrivals Asumbi Girls from Homa Bay 21-8 in the finals.

Ng’iya saw off Ogande Girls 21-12 in the semi-final to secure their spot at the nationals again alongside Asumbi, who, after gracing the nationals in Term One with their 5x5 team, make a return after they knocked out Nyakach Girls 14-13.

“This was a revenge win for us after the disappointing defeat during the Term One finals in Migori. We knew we had made it to the nationals, but we wanted the regional title more. The push for East Africa now begins,” said Ng'iya basketball coach Naftali Ambala.

In volleyball, Gogo Mixed Secondary School and Nyakongo Girls were crowned champions in boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively.

Gogo from Homa Bay withstood a tough comeback attempt by St Mary’s Yala to win 3-2, claiming the penultimate tiebreaker 15-12 to book their spot in Kakamega next month.

In the girls’ final, which was a Siaya County affair, Nyakongo avenged their defeat at the county level to edge Aluor Girls 3-2.

Nyanza Region Secondary School Sports Association (NRSSSA) vice chairman Ngala Mbuor commended the Kisumu fans for maintaining peace during the highly intense games, especially football, and urged all teams to now shift focus to nationals and move together as a region.

“We had very good games that were clean and without any major age cheats and complains. Our goal is clean sports, and I am happy with peace from Kisumu, we achieved our goal,” said the principal of St Patrick’s Segere Mixed Secondary School.
