St Mary’s School Yala kicked off the Nyanza Region Secondary Term two games on the front foot on Thursday after seeing off Agai High School 2-0 in Group B’s high stakes football match played at Moi Stadium.

The Siaya County champions are eying a maiden appearance at the nationals set for Kakamega next month and needed to win before facing Gekendo and Rapogi in their final matches.

Herman Ochieng and Javan Omondi struck in the first half for the Black Saints who now sit in good position to make the semis as they need a win in their last two matches to book a spot in the last four

At the same stadium, Kisumu County football girls’ champions Nyakach Girls begun their journey to recapture their lost Nyanza Region title on the front foot after thrashing Jera Girls 4-0.

Nyakach lost 2-1 to Alara Girls from Homa Bay in last year’s Nyanza finals played in Kisii and with Alara out of this year’s games, the throne remains vacant for the taking.

Emily Adhiambo scored a brace for Nyakach with Lilian Adhiambo and Beryl Awuor also scoring against the recently crowned Siaya County champions.

The win saw Nyakach lead Group B with three points.

In Group A, Mobamba from Kisii stunned many after edging out Homa Bay County champions Kobala Girls 2-1 with only eight players on the field.

Before the match, Mobamba had only nine players cleared and after one player was injured, they finished the match with only eight players.

Anjengo on the other hand defeated Ongicha 1-0.
