Crunch time in FKF PL as title hopefuls and strugglers lock horns

The 2024-2025 FKF Premier League season will enter another decisive stretch today when the top three teams continue their push for the title while the bottom seven continue to fight to avoid relegation.

With just four matches left in the season, every point is now precious.

At the summit, Kenya Police (58 points) hold a narrow three-point advantage over Tusker (55 points), with record champions Gor Mahia (53 points) just five points adrift with a game in hand.

Much focus is already on these three outfits in what promises to be a thrilling sprint to the finish line.

Today, Police, who have already proven doubters wrong with their consistency since the beginning of the campaign, will travel to play Kakamega Homeboyz in Mumias, Kakamega County.

The law enforcers boast the league's best defence (14 goals conceded) and are unbeaten in 10 matches, but Homeboyz (48 points) are unbeaten when playing at their backyard at Mumias Sports Complex.

In fact, the last time Homeboyz lost a home game was last year in September when they went down 1-0 to Kariobangi Sharks.

Since then, Homeboyz have won six matches and drawn seven, proving Mumias to be a fortress that surely will be a tough arena for Police to crack.

History, however, favours Police who have beaten Homeboyz three times in their seven meetings, twice winning at their backyard. Homeboyz have won twice, and they have shared points twice. The last time Homeboyz beat Police was in December 2022.

Meanwhile, Tusker-just three points off the top-travel to play FC Talanta in a must-win clash.

Talanta (32 points) sit just two points above the drop zone and are desperate for a win, making this fixture a potential banana skin for the brewers.

Tusker, with the highest goals scored (40) among the top three, will rely on their attacking edge to get over the line.

Gor Mahia, who are arguably in the best position with a game in hand, host bottom-placed Nairobi City Stars tomorrow at Dandora Stadium.

K'Ogalo, unbeaten in their last three matches, will look to capitalise on any slip-up from the top two.

At the other end of the table, the battle for survival is intense and is also expected to go down to the wire.

From Posta Rangers in 14th place (32 points) to Nairobi City Stars in 18th (27 points), seven clubs are separated by just five points.

A single matchday could dramatically alter the relegation picture.

Murang'a Seal, sitting in 17th with 29 points, face 11th-placed Sofapaka, who are only marginally better off (40 points).

A win for Seal at home in Murang'a could pull them out of the relegation zone and drag others closer to danger.

Bidco United-also on 29 points-visits high-flying Shabana, who are fourth with 49 points and still hoping to sneak into the continental football conversation.

Shabana, who will be playing in front of their passionate Kisii crowd, will be looking to narrow the gap on the league leaders. Tore Bobe saw off KCB 1-0 last Friday.

Mara Sugar (31 points) will be hoping home advantage helps them in their clash against Bandari. Bandari are tied on 40 points with eighth-placed Sofapaka, but Mara need every point they can get to avoid an immediate drop after promotion.

Elsewhere, Kariobangi Sharks (33 points) face a tricky tie against KCB, who are chasing a top-five finish, while Ulinzi Stars (36 points) take on relegation-threatened Posta Rangers (32 points) in Lang'ata.
