Anthony Akumu: Don't write us off yet

If there was a time national football team Harambee Stars needed their fans behind them, this is that time.

For midfielder Anthony Akumu, he has not lost hope on qualifying for the Afcon 2025, and prays that their fans won't lose theirs too.

The national team is preparing for a double fixture against Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Kenya will play both games at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, due to the lack of CAF-accredited stadiums in Kenya.

Despite recent setbacks, Akumu is confident that Stars can turn around their fortunes.

"We know we disappointed in the matches against Cameroon, but that's in the past now," said Akumu.

"Our focus is firmly on winning the next two matches. We believe we have what it takes to make it to Afcon in Morocco."

Kenya currently sits third in the group with 4 points, trailing Cameroon (10 points) and Zimbabwe (8 points).

Securing wins in these two matches is crucial if they are to have any chance of reaching the tournament.

For Akumu, the dream of playing in Afcon is personal.

"Missing out in 2019 after I was dropped from the team was very difficult to deal with. It would be a dream come true to play in the continental games this time," he said.

Akumu's message to Kenyan fans was one of reassurance: "We understand the fans' frustrations, but we promise to give our best on the field. Don't write us off yet."

Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has made a few key changes to the squad ahead of the qualifiers. Goalkeeper Brian Bwire replaces Ian Otieno, while defender Daniel Sakari has joined in place of Adam Wilson, who is absent due to a family bereavement.

Bwire's experience will add depth to the goalkeeping lineup, joining Byrne Odhiambo and Faruk Shikhalo.

The squad's defense will rely on solid performers like Joseph Okumu, Johnstone Omurwa, and Eric Ouma, who will be tasked with maintaining a tight backline.

The inclusion of versatile midfielders such as Marvin Nabwire and Duke Abuya, alongside Akumu, provides Firat with flexibility in creating a balanced strategy.

Kenya's forward line will be spearheaded by captain Michael Olunga, supported by Jonah Ayunga and John Avire.

Kenya's first match is set for tomorrow against Zimbabwe, with the second against Namibia being held next Tuesday.

Both games will test the Stars' resolve and team dynamics as they seek to secure their place at Afcon 2025.
