Staunch Gor Mahia FC fan Nicholas Nguka Were has advised the 20th times Kenyan Premier League champions to go for a solid recruitment drive ahead of next season's CAF Champions League showdown.

The Homa Bay based watchman reiterates that contracting competent players is the only way his beloved outfit can cruise comfortably in the continental showpiece where K'Ogalo will be making a return after missing out this season.

"I'm also praying for Gor to get an able tactician who is so well conversant with African football. I'm praying that we make it to the quarters or semis in the tournament," Were told Standard Sports.

Were, who hails from Ndhiwa Constituency, was speaking in Nairobi on Thursday at a colourful ceremony where he was feted for winning last week's Sh15 Million Betika Midweek Jackpot.

"With the funds, I'm going to pay school fees for five of my kids who are still in school.

"I'm also going to build rentals, at the same time I'm going to kit my son Brian who is a very passionate footballer hoping to play for Gor in the near future," the father of 10 stated.

When asked how he felt when he realised he had won the huge amount, the 51 year stated: "I felt overwhelmed, I couldn't believe, I couldn't even breath, I sat down for a moment to digest the phone call I had received from the gaming firm that I was the winner, I still can't believe it to date."

While advising Were to utilise the funds won wisely, Betika Managing Director Mutua Mutava said: " We are proud of him, we are ready to offer him any kind of support that will ensure the money is utilise towards building his family, we do not want the funds to go into waste.

In his hey days as a player, Were, a former winger, guided Uriri High School to the Provincials in schools football.

Internationally, Were is a staunch supporter of Chelsea which he is hopeful to do better next season after picking up momentum very late in the English Premier League.

At the ongoing Euro2024 showpiece, Were is routing for hosts Germany to lift the cup.
